Types of Roofing Shingles: Which One Is Right for Your Iowa Home?

Asphalt, architectural, impact-resistant, metal — there are more shingle options than most homeowners realize. Here's how to choose the right material for Eastern Iowa weather and your budget.

When it's time to replace your roof, the shingle choice matters more than most homeowners expect. The right material affects how long your roof lasts, how well it handles Iowa hail and ice, and what your home looks like for the next 20 to 30 years. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the most common options.

3-Tab Asphalt Shingles

The most affordable option on the market. Three-tab shingles are flat, uniform in appearance, and have a lifespan of around 15–20 years. They work fine in mild climates but tend to struggle with the wind and hail Iowa sees every spring. If you're on a tight budget and plan to sell the house in the next few years, three-tab can make sense. Otherwise, we usually recommend stepping up.

  • Lowest upfront cost
  • 15–20 year lifespan
  • Less wind resistance than architectural shingles
  • Limited style options

Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles

The most popular choice for Eastern Iowa homes, and for good reason. Architectural shingles are thicker, heavier, and more durable than 3-tab. They have a layered, textured look that adds real curb appeal. Most carry a 30-year warranty, and many last 40+ years with proper installation. For most homeowners replacing a roof in Iowa, architectural shingles hit the right balance of cost, durability, and appearance.

  • 30-year manufacturer warranty
  • Better wind resistance (up to 110–130 mph)
  • Dimensional look adds curb appeal
  • Best value for most Iowa homes

Impact-Resistant Shingles

If your neighborhood has been hit by hail more than once, impact-resistant shingles are worth considering. These are rated Class 4 — the highest impact resistance rating available — and some insurance companies in Iowa offer a discount on your premium for having them. The upfront cost is higher than standard architectural shingles, but between the longer lifespan and potential insurance savings, they often pay for themselves.

  • Class 4 impact resistance rating
  • Potential insurance premium discount
  • Ideal for hail-prone areas in Iowa
  • 40+ year lifespan when properly maintained

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has come a long way from the corrugated barn roofs you picture in rural Iowa. Modern standing seam and metal shingle systems look sharp on residential homes and last 40–70 years — often for the life of the home. Metal handles snow load, ice dams, and wind better than any asphalt product. The higher upfront cost is the main barrier, but if you plan to stay in your home long-term, metal is hard to beat.

  • 40–70 year lifespan
  • Excellent for snow, ice, and wind
  • Energy efficient — reflects heat in summer
  • Higher upfront cost, lower lifetime cost

Wood Shake and Cedar Shingles

Cedar shingles give a home a natural, warm look that's hard to replicate with synthetic materials. They're a good insulator and can last 30 years with proper maintenance. The downside: they require more upkeep than asphalt or metal, they're more susceptible to moss and moisture in Iowa's humid summers, and they cost more than architectural asphalt. We install them, but we always have an honest conversation about the maintenance commitment first.

  • Natural aesthetic, unique look
  • Good insulating properties
  • Requires regular maintenance
  • Higher cost and shorter lifespan without upkeep

There's no single right answer — the best shingle for your home depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay, your neighborhood's hail history, and what look you're going for. If you're not sure, give us a call. We'll come out, look at your roof, and give you an honest recommendation without the sales pressure.
